A disorder that causes the muscles to get progressively weaker The disorder is called Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Muscles are made up of many long cells. These cells form the muscle fibers. With this disorder, muscle cells are destroyed and partly replaced by fat or connective tissue. The disease is hereditary. Other family members may also be affected.
The disorder usually begins within the first few years of life. The disorder causes the muscles to get weaker and weaker. This initially affects the muscles in the hips and legs in particular. The child will have an unsteady gait and frequent falls. The joints may become less mobile and stiffen. The spine may become curved. Over time, the ability to walk is lost. Muscles in other parts of the body may also become weaker. If the respiratory muscles or the heart muscles are affected then you can be very seriously ill.
